About Us

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) was established in 1981 by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) in Mumbai. What began as a modest initiative, a two-year full-time Master’s programme in Management Studies housed in a small space above Bhaidas Hall in Vile Parle, with just four full-time faculty members and a pioneering batch of 40 students, has evolved into one of India’s most respected institutions.

From these humble beginnings, NMIMS grew steadily, guided by its commitment to academic excellence and industry relevance. In 2003, it was conferred the prestigious status of a Deemed-to-be University under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956.

This recognition enabled NMIMS to diversify its academic portfolio beyond management studies, expanding into disciplines such as engineering, pharmacy, architecture, commerce, law, liberal arts, design, economics, hospitality, and performing arts. 

Over the years, NMIMS has transformed into a multidisciplinary, multi-campus, and research-driven university with state-of-the-art infrastructure, globally benchmarked curricula, and a strong focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Today, it has campuses across India, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Shirpur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Indore, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh.

With a thriving community of over 27,000 alumni holding leadership positions across industries worldwide, NMIMS continues to stand among the country’s foremost institutions of higher education. Deena Mehta - Director (Chairperson)

Deena Mehta is a distinguished Chartered Accountant and finance professional with extensive experience in India’s capital markets. She holds a Master’s degree in Management Studies (Finance), a Post Graduate Diploma in Securities Law, and a Diploma in Stock Market Studies. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1984, she began her career with Crompton Greaves Limited as a management trainee in finance before entering the stock market industry in 1986 as the first woman to enter the trading ring. Following legal reforms in 1994, she became a stock exchange member in her own name.

She played a key role in transforming Indian capital markets through her work on major stock exchange committees and SEBI-led reforms, helping improve transparency, investor protection, and market efficiency. She has served as Vice-President and President of BSE and held board positions at institutions including BSE Ltd., CDSL, NPCI, Bank of India Clearing Corporation, ITI Ltd., NISUS Fund, Magma Housing (now Poonawala Housing), and Reliance Asset Reconstruction Company.

Beyond finance, she has conducted over 2,000 investor education programs across India and contributed to rehabilitation efforts after the Bhuj earthquake and tsunami disasters. Recipient of more than 100 awards, Deena Mehta is respected for her leadership, corporate governance expertise, and strong ethical values inspired by the Bhagavad Gita.

Mr. Vijay Chandok has been serving as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) since November 2024.

He brings with him over three decades of rich experience from the ICICI Group, where he held several key leadership positions. He served as the Managing Director & CEO of ICICI Securities Ltd. for five years, from 2019 to 2024. Prior to that, he was Executive Director on the Board of ICICI Bank.

During his tenure at ICICI Bank, Mr. Chandok was responsible for multiple businesses, including International Banking, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), Global Markets, and Commercial Banking. Over the years, he also contributed to the Retail Banking, Rural and Agri, and Corporate Banking verticals.

He has served on the Boards of several ICICI Group entities, including ICICI Bank UK Plc, ICICI Bank Canada, and ICICI Bank (Eurasia) Limited, and was the Chairman of ICICI Investment Management Company Limited.

Currently, Mr. Chandok serves as the Co-Chair of the Capital Market Committee of FICCI and ASSOCHAM. He is a member of several SEBI Committees such as MDAC, SMAC, FPI, and CoBoSAC, and serves on the Boards of NSDL Payments Bank and NDML. In the past, he has been associated with the Advisory Committees of BSE, NSE, and NSDL, and was part of the SEBI Committee that worked on the harmonisation of the ICDR and LODR regulations, as well as promoting ease of doing business.

Mr. Chandok holds a Master’s degree in Management Studies (MMS) from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi (formerly IT-BHU). In 2017, he was conferred with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by NMIMS University.

Mr. Rajesh Bhojani is a seasoned professional with over 40 years of experience across the financial services and education sectors. He has held senior leadership roles at Aditya Birla Group, UTI Mutual Fund, and the British Council, and was closely associated with Birla Mutual Fund since its inception.

He has also served as an Independent Director at PPFAS Asset Management Pvt. Ltd., and currently holds the position of Independent Director at Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company Ltd.

A strong advocate of financial planning, Mr. Bhojani has played a pioneering role in promoting financial literacy and systematic investing in India. Alongside his work in financial services, he has contributed significantly to the education sector through his association with the British Council, helping bridge global learning and institutional development.

As an advisor to leading financial services organisations, he provides strategic guidance in areas such as market expansion, product development, strategic acquisitions, and operational optimisation to drive sustainable corporate growth.

Mr. Bhojani completed his Master’s in Management Studies (MMS) from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in 1984.

Professional Experience:

Mr. Bimal Desai began his career with the Essar Group (1989–1994), where he gained extensive experience across shipping, public issue distribution, and project management. He was actively involved in setting up India’s first Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Hazira and later took charge of domestic sales operations.

From 1995 to 2003, he successfully ran his own business ventures in transport, non-ferrous commodity trading, and private investment banking.

Since 2003, Mr. Desai has been engaged in multiple entrepreneurial pursuits, including:

  •  Strategic partnership and management of India Steel Works Ltd., a fully integrated stainless-steel plant at Khopoli, which he led till 2019.
  • Real estate and construction (since 2007), involving land development, residential, and mixed-use projects.
  •  Agriculture ventures with a focus on sustainable practices.
  •  Hospitality, currently overseeing the development of a resort project outside Mumbai.

Mr. Malcolm Raphael, with over 25 years of experience, has quite literally been on all sides of the marketing and communication spectrum, advertising, consulting, marketing, and media.

Throughout his career, he has worked with a diverse portfolio of brands, ranging from multinational corporations and homegrown Indian brands to SMEs. During his stints in advertising and brand consulting, he played a key role in launching and relaunching several brands, as well as leading projects in corporate identity development, brand rejuvenation, architecture, packaging, and retail design.

In his 15-year tenure at Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd. (The Times Group), he made significant contributions to the print industry by driving creative strategy, innovation, and elevating creativity in print advertising. He was instrumental in conceptualising and launching the flagship intellectual property “Power of Print”, through which several impactful brand campaigns were created.

Mr. Raphael has also served as a Managing Committee Member of The Advertising Club, India, where he managed the country’s relationships with Cannes Lions and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA). He has been part of multiple prestigious juries, including the Effies, Emvies, and Abbys.

With over two decades of experience in the media and entertainment industry, Ms. Parinda Vijay Singh has led marketing for some of India’s most influential media brands, including Star TV, NDTV Imagine, and Zee TV. Dr. Jayant Gandhi is a renowned ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) surgeon with more than 40 years of clinical expertise. He is actively associated with NMIMS University, serving on key statutory bodies such as the Internal Quality Assurance Committee (IQAC). A highly accomplished medical professional, he holds several prestigious positions, including Honorary ENT Surgeon at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital, and he also runs his own established practice, Gandhi Nursing Home in Santacruz West, Mumbai.

Widely respected in his field, Dr. Gandhi has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to ENT healthcare and medical education. Shailesh Chaturvedi has played a pivotal role in shaping several Arvind Fashions brands for more than 15 years. He began his career in 1992 as a management trainee with the British Madura Coats Group, eventually taking on the role of GM – Marketing, after completing his Engineering and MBA. He later joined Allen Solly as Business Head in 2005–2006. In 2006, he went on to become the CEO of Tommy Hilfiger India. Over his 28-year career, he has held key leadership positions at Madura Coats, United Colors of Benetton, and Arvind, establishing himself as a respected figure in the apparel industry. He served as the MD & CEO of Tommy Hilfiger India and also oversaw both Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein during his tenure.

Ashoke Basak  , Mr. Basak, a retired IAS officer, has served the Government of Maharashtra in several key roles, including Additional Chief Secretary, Chairman of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, and Secretary of Water Conservation and EGS. His distinguished career also includes significant appointments such as CEO of Bhir Zilla Parishad, Collector of Nasik and Nanded districts, and Commissioner of Dairy Development. With over two decades of leadership experience across multinational corporations such as Lederle, Wyeth, and Pfizer, he brings deep expertise in strategy, governance, and business transformation.

For more than 13 years, he has mentored emerging leaders at premier institutions including NMIMS, Welingkar Institute, SIMSR, XIMR, and Chetana’s Institute of Management. A founding member and Director of the NMIMS Business School Alumni Association since 2012, Mr. Sharma also serves as Director of Therapeutics Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. and CEO of Pareto Solutions.
